36 Years of Real-World Electrical Experience

I’m Kirk Saavedra, a California C-10 electrical contractor, electrician, author, and educator with 36 years of hands-on experience in the electrical trade. My background spans industrial, commercial, and residential electrical work, with much of my career centered on troubleshooting, controls, electrical systems, and solving problems in the field.

My industrial experience includes working with three-phase electrical systems, motors, motor controls, contactors and relays, control circuits, transformers, variable-frequency drives, PLCs, sensors, instrumentation, electrical panels, and industrial machinery. Troubleshooting has always been a major part of my work—tracing circuits, interpreting schematics, diagnosing equipment failures, taking electrical measurements, and determining why a system that should be working isn't.

I have also worked extensively in commercial electrical environments, including electrical distribution, lighting, equipment circuits, panels, controls, and troubleshooting. My experience has taken me into specialized environments as well, including medical facilities and clean-room applications where electrical work requires careful planning, attention to detail, and an understanding of systems where reliability matters.

Residential electrical work has also been an important part of my career. From service and repair work to electrical troubleshooting, panels, circuits, and existing electrical systems, I've spent decades seeing how electrical problems actually present themselves outside of a textbook.

I earned my California C-10 Electrical Contractor license in 1999 and have spent my career continuing to learn the trade while working in it. Electrical technology has changed considerably during that time—from traditional electromechanical controls to increasingly sophisticated electronic controls, PLCs, drives, and automated systems—but the fundamentals of understanding a circuit and troubleshooting it methodically remain just as important.

That experience is what I bring to my books.

I write for electricians, technicians, students, apprentices, maintenance personnel, and people who simply want a clearer understanding of electrical systems. My goal is not to make electrical subjects sound more complicated than they are. It is to take what I have learned through decades of hands-on work and explain it in a practical, straightforward way.

Whether the subject is industrial electrical troubleshooting, schematics, PLCs, ladder logic, motor controls, three-phase power, VFDs, transformers, control circuits, electrical safety, or basic electrical fundamentals, I approach it from the same perspective:

Understand what the system is supposed to do. Understand how the circuit works. Then use that knowledge to find the problem.

The books I write are an extension of the work I have spent my career doing—turning real-world electrical experience into practical knowledge that others can use.
